Changes in Healthcare Are A-Comin'

Over the past week, we've received several calls from current patients who have recently received letters from their health care insurance companies announcing their chiropractic coverage would no longer be available under their current plans beginning January 1, 2010.
Let this serve as your wake up everyone! This is about to become the norm....so get proactive and take your health into your own hands.
As the entire healthcare system looks to become overhauled, alternative medicines and concepts are likely the first to fall by the way-side.
So what should you do?
Well, if you're a patient who's been using and seeing results from chiropractic - we encourage all of you to find a way to continue with your treatments. In our office we've been working on re-vamping our payment options, as well as our cash plans in an attempt to make everyone able to still come in and continue his/her needed care.
If it's time for you to "re-enroll" for your company's health plan, really read the fine print and decide what is best for you and your family.
If you aren't in need of prescription drugs/medications, and you simply go to the doctor for an annual exam - look to use your money better.
In addition, we encourage everyone to check into flex spending or HSA accounts. Although it is rumored under the new health care bill that the government is likely to eliminate HSA accounts, we believe it's still a very good way to pay for health costs that you truly need. You earn interest on your deposits (which is why the government now wants a piece), your unused portion rolls over for use the following year, and it only goes to pay for health-related things.
Most of all, become more aware of what your insurance may or may not covered.
Know your co-payment limits and deductibles.
And continue to exercise, live healthy and thrive!

Improving Athletic Performance Through Nutritional Supplements

At our Roseville Family Chiropractic, we are huge advocates for consuming water - especially when exercising or exerting energy.

Athletes looking to optimize their ability to cope with the warmer temperatures during strenuous physical activity can benefit from supplementation. Electrolyte loss, free radical formation and the need for biochemical participants like vitamins and minerals is heavily increased.

At minimum, athletes should consume a complete multi-vitamin/mineral supplement containing generous amounts of basic antioxidants like beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E.

This should also contain adequate amounts of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and chloride. Active athletes finding it difficult to maintain their body weight during the summertime will find a weight gainer indispensable. Those in need of an energy boost should give energy bars and carbohydrate powders/drinks a whirl. When it comes to protein, there is no question that demands are increased under the extra stress of exercising in the heat.

A recent study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found branched-chain amino acid supplementation could prolong moderate exercise performance in the heat. Branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) are anti-catabolic essential aminos which are in high demand anytime the body undergoes physical stress. Alternatively, a high quality protein powder with added branched-chain amino acids can be taken.

Heat Acclimatization
Many experienced athletes have also utilized heat acclimatization in order to minimize heat-related illnesses. Similar to your body adjusting to a change in altitude, heat acclimatization depends on the adaptive powers of the body.

Over a period of 10-14 days, the athlete gradually increases the intensity and duration of the workout while in the new environment. This allows the body to respond and successfully adjust to the increased demands placed on the body by the heat.

7 Tips You Need to Know After A Car Accident

If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident there are a million things racing through your head. We have listed seven helpful tips you need to know if/when that time comes.

1. Preventative: Make sure you have "med-pay" coverage on your insurance that will cover your care should the other parties involved not have coverage. This is the single-best course of action to avoid larger problems should an accident occur. Consider it insurance for the insurance. If you're not sure of your exact coverage right now, call your local insurance agent and review your policy. It's usually a few dollars more a month for this coverage, but it's the best line of defense.

2. Get all the parties information who were involved in the accident. Witnesses help too.

3. Contact your insurance to inform them of the accident as soon as possible.

4. Take pictures of the vehicles and yourself as soon as possible.

5. Call the police and request a full report be made if the accident damages and/or personal injuries have occurred.

6. Make a doctor's appointment (we recommend a chiropractor) for a brief, but thorough, examination.

7. Contact a personal injury attorney to represent you if insurance companies and involved parties aren't quickly coming to reasonable settlement.

More things you may not know about auto accidents.

Often, individuals involved in motor vehicle accidents experience minimal or no symptoms for the first few weeks and even months. It's important to not only receive immediate and appropriate treatment for any injuries sustained, but also to document the extent of the injuries, if present.

Failure to obtain a timely evaluation or appropriate treatment for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident may negate your ability to receive monetary compensation for any future medical bills resulting from the accident, negate your ability to receive pain and suffering settlements, and negate compensation for work loss.

What chiropractors can determine:

- the extent of the injury or injuries
- the number of estimated treatments required to treat your injuries
- if referral to another medical specialist is required
- if special tests are required (i.e. MRI, CT Scan, etc.)
- if you need to take "injury time off" from work (and provide you with a note to present to your employer)
- whether obtaining legal representation may be in your best interests (and recommend some excellent attorneys)

If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident, call (or have them call) our office immediately. The quicker you receive the care you need, the quicker your injuries will heal and the faster you can get on with your life.

Why Does My Head Hurt

So you have a headache. It stinks....but the good news is, you're not alone - and there's help available.

According to the latest research, 9% of men and 12% of women in the U.S. experience at least 1-2 headache episodes per month. And, more than 4% of the U.S. population suffers from frequent headaches, defined as headaches that occur at least 180 days a year. Needless to say, headaches have become a social and economic burden in the United States, as well as other parts of the world.

Scientists have identified over 300 causes for headaches. Various pain-sensitive structures and tissues including the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, arteries, periosteal bone covering, and the upper cervical and facial nerves produce headaches when irritated or injured. Fortunately, only a handful of causes are responsible for the majority of headaches.
The most common of these headaches include:

Cervicogenic- problems within the neck
Muscle-tension- neck and upper back muscular spasms
Post-traumatic- following head/neck trauma, i.e. whiplash
Drug-induced- from analgesic overuse
Migraines
Cluster

Doctors of chiropractic successfully help thousands of individuals everyday obtain safe, effective, long-term relief from their headaches. This is because most headaches have a spinal, muscular, or habitual component which the chiropractor has been trained to identify and treat.

In fact, surveys show that 10-25% of patients initiate chiropractic care for the relief of headaches.
