Too much of a good thing is still too much

This is just a friendly reminder to everyone as we approach this holiday weekend - be careful not to over eat.
Yea, I know....easier said than done. But, if you want some tricks on how to avoid overeating we've got a few quick and easy suggestions.

1. Snack throughout the day. Light snacking, especially on vegetables and other healthy alternatives is a good say to ensure that you won't be famished by the time dinner comes around.

2. Try to go for a walk or to the gym early in the morning. Exercising early in the morning will give you energy throughout the day and 'pre-burn' some calories before the big meal.

3. When it comes to filling your dinner plate, pile the vegetables and other healthy options high. Piling on healthier alternatives will help ensure there's little or no room for the less-healthy options.

4. Drink lots of water throughout your day. Drinking water not only will keep you hydradrated and fueled for the long-haul with the in-laws, but help keep you full and satiated detering hunger pains.

5. Pass on the gravy's and sauces. Simply avoiding excessive dressings, sauces, gravy's, whip creams and other toppings usually found on Thanksgiving plates can save you tons on unneeded calories.

If you can incorporate any or all of these tasks to your turkey day, you'll find yourself getting through your day without a huge caloric intake and without becoming a huge, lethargic couch potato.

Have a happy and healthy holiday.

Doctors sometimes have to take doctors orders

Recently I had an doctor's exam in which a very minor issue was discovered. I had just come back from vacation and was well rested and relaxed, and eager to get back to work and seeing patients.

However, the doctor strongly suggested I take the rest of the week off work to allow time for the issue to naturally resolve itself.

"The week off," I replied. "I just had a week off on vacation...and next week is Thanksgiving. I can't take a week off."

Well there I was. Just like I hear every day in our office I found myself pleading to the doctor, "well then can I just do this....or what about this,...or that."

The doctor kindly replied with a, "no you may not" to all of my inquiries. Then looking directly at me and right in front of my husband she added, "and that also means no shopping."

As my husband triumphantly repeated the 'doctor's orders' I could only hang my head in disgust. Afterall, I felt fine. I was well-rested. But because something inside was wrong and needed time to correct itself I had to stop everything I was doing.

So, for five days I was under doctor's orders for the first time in my life. While I took advantage of the time off to read magazines, plan a Thanksgiving menu, watch six movies, clear out the Tivo, and lie around a ton - I still wanted to be doing something other than what I was forced to be doing.

I wanted more than anything to return to the normalcy in my life and practice after a wonderful vacation and was forced to take time off.

I realized, sometimes in our lives, we're forced to sit for a minute.

And even though I felt great and wanted to ignore the advice of my doctor - I knew deep down she was right and I needed to simply comply in order to get better. Like I had found myself saying to patients a million times before, I found myself saying for the first time from the other side of the fence.

When I realized this all I could do was laugh and think to myself, 'sometimes even doctors have to take doctors orders.'

It's a Big World After All

After having just returned from a vacation in Walt Disney World I've got one thing to say, "We're going to the gym". After being surrounded by hot dogs, hamburgers, pretzels, ice cream and soda, it's no wonder why the average park goer was morbidly obese.
We all just kept wondering what all of the foreign visitors were thinking about their 'Disney experience'.
Between the hoards of assorted strollers, the segway-riding employees and the multitude of motorized carts - it'll be amazing if anyone in our culture will be walking anywhere within the next 10 years.
While today's amusement parks are massive daily undertakings for even the most in-shape, it was 'utterly' amazing (pun intended) to see the countless onslaughts of morbidly obese people.
By way of comparison, our group of six (including a pregnant woman, a five year old and a nine year old) took turns sharing three pedometers to track our daily mileage throughout the parks.
Following is a chart of the mileage we clocked trekking through the four main theme parks of Orlando (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios).
Day One - Travel Day (4.5 miles)
Day Two - Magic Kingdom (8.5 miles)
Day Three - Animal Kingdom (9.5 miles)
Day Four - Epcot/Hollywood Studios (15 miles)
Day Five - Magic Kingdom (11 miles)
Day Six - Epcot/Hollywood Studios (9.5 miles)
Day Seven - Animal Kingdom/Downtown Disney (8 miles)
Day Eight - Travel Day (4 miles)

Yes folks, 70 miles in 8 days/7 nights. Just shy of 10 miles a day.

In addition to walking everywhere, we also brought our lunches into the park everyday (sandwiches, apple slices, carrot sticks, chips and light snacks). These precautions and drinking lots of water ensured all of us stayed fit and happy throughout the duration of the vacation and enjoyed everything to the fullest.
Sure we were all tired and slept well each night, but we all had the stamina to meet each new day.
My hope with this piece is that others will begin to think more about their health choices.
Because remember people, "It's a SMALL world after all."

Other things to do during the time change

Twice a year we adjust our crazy lives and schedules one hour to adjust for daylight. At least those of us in most of the 50 U.S. states and a few other places in the world anyway.

Take the time during this Fall time change to also do a few other things that can benefit you and your family members.

1. Change batteries in your smoke alarms and/or flashlights

2. Change your pillow - the Better Sleep Council recommends new pillows every year or so to maximize your sleeping comfort.

3. Change your water filter on your refrigerator

4. Change the filters in your home heating/cooling return

5. Drain and refill your hot water heaters - getting rid of unwanted sediment makes for a cleaner, longer-lasting water heater.

Take advantage of these tips and make sure you and your home are properly prepared this winter.

Help Yourself: Become Health Insurance Aware

The title of this blog says it all. Help yourself.

If there's anyone who hates to beat an old drum - it's us. But the current state of healthcare and more importantly, health insurance, continues to get more muddled every day.

Yesterday (10/21), the Today show had a family who's toddler-aged daughter was being denied health coverage because her weight was in the bottom third percentile for her age. My initial response is what, "now we're promoting obesity."

The reason the toddler was being denied coverage was because the child had a "pre-existing" condition of a gag-reflex which significantly impacted her eating habits. The child was however, responding well to treatments and the insurance company said it would reconsider her for coverage in the future should her condition change.

Now, the irony with this scenario is that the only family member who "needs" medical assistance and therefore, insurance coverage - is the one who doesn't have it and can't get it.

We call these oxymorons in our office.

Life insurance is really death insurance. You don't/can't collect until you die.

Health insurance, is actually sickness insurance as you only need/use it when your sick.

The moral of this particular blog is it's more important than ever to take charge of your family's health care.

Choose your employers more carefully (those who may offer benefits more relevant to your family's needs); choose your coverages more carefully (if you have choices between multiple companies); and read, call and truly understand what will be expected of you when life gives you a health issue.

Being aware and proactive can help you and your family in the long-run.

Here comes the rain again

In Northern California, Fall has finally come. And with that comes the much welcome rain.

Despite needing all the rain we can get, rains can cause a ton of headaches if you're not properly prepared.

Make sure your vehicles are in good order headed into the Winter months. Fog, wind, rain and other factors come into play during any given day leading to a variety of accident potential.

Check all tires and make sure tread is adequate, brakes are checked, windshield wipers are clean and in good working condition and that your insurance coverage is secured. If you don't know already, check into your coverage and make sure you have "med-pay" coverage included in your policy. This is to cover you in the event your injuries are substantial and attorneys become involved.

Taking precautions up front to ensure you and your family is covered will make situations much easier in the event of an accident.

Of course, if you are in an accident - document everything. Eye witnesses, police reports, medical bills or copies of x-rays or exam findings are important to building a proper case should damages need to be recovered.

In addition, be sure to pay a visit to your trusted chiropractor to properly evaluate the extent of any injuries that may have been sustained as a result of the accident.

Be smart, stay day and have a happy and healthy Fall season.

Take YOUR Health in YOUR Hands

With all the talk these days about diseases, flu shots, H1N1 virus, health care bill reforms etc, it has become more important than ever to become aware of how to best care for you and your family.
From knowing where your local hospitals are, to what kind of insurance coverage you have if you or a loved one is involved in an accident and needs unexpected care.

It is essential and in our office we say it's mandatory for patients to learn, know and fully comprehend the extent of their health care benefits and what coverage they actually have.

Empower yourself to go to your human resource departments and ask specific questions about your health care options as an employee.

If you don't have many options available, consider opening an HSA (Health Savings Account) or other side account specifically designed to pay for medical expenses only with a ton of benefits.

If putting money into a savings account is challenging on a montly basis but you or your family still requires care, consider opening a Care Credit medical financing account. The card can only be used at Care Credit accepting medical offices (so it can not be abused), but is a great way to pay minimal monthly payments for care, instead of larger lumpsum pricing.

Becoming aware of health care is a complicated thing to do right now given the current state of affairs. However, with a little work, some research online and asking the proper questions to human resource directions, your health care providers and insurance companies - the better designed plan you'll have for you and your family when the time comes.

Changes in Healthcare Are A-Comin'

Over the past week, we've received several calls from current patients who have recently received letters from their health care insurance companies announcing their chiropractic coverage would no longer be available under their current plans beginning January 1, 2010.
Let this serve as your wake up everyone! This is about to become the norm....so get proactive and take your health into your own hands.
As the entire healthcare system looks to become overhauled, alternative medicines and concepts are likely the first to fall by the way-side.
So what should you do?
Well, if you're a patient who's been using and seeing results from chiropractic - we encourage all of you to find a way to continue with your treatments. In our office we've been working on re-vamping our payment options, as well as our cash plans in an attempt to make everyone able to still come in and continue his/her needed care.
If it's time for you to "re-enroll" for your company's health plan, really read the fine print and decide what is best for you and your family.
If you aren't in need of prescription drugs/medications, and you simply go to the doctor for an annual exam - look to use your money better.
In addition, we encourage everyone to check into flex spending or HSA accounts. Although it is rumored under the new health care bill that the government is likely to eliminate HSA accounts, we believe it's still a very good way to pay for health costs that you truly need. You earn interest on your deposits (which is why the government now wants a piece), your unused portion rolls over for use the following year, and it only goes to pay for health-related things.
Most of all, become more aware of what your insurance may or may not covered.
Know your co-payment limits and deductibles.
And continue to exercise, live healthy and thrive!

Improving Athletic Performance Through Nutritional Supplements

At our Roseville Family Chiropractic, we are huge advocates for consuming water - especially when exercising or exerting energy.

Athletes looking to optimize their ability to cope with the warmer temperatures during strenuous physical activity can benefit from supplementation. Electrolyte loss, free radical formation and the need for biochemical participants like vitamins and minerals is heavily increased.

At minimum, athletes should consume a complete multi-vitamin/mineral supplement containing generous amounts of basic antioxidants like beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E.

This should also contain adequate amounts of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and chloride. Active athletes finding it difficult to maintain their body weight during the summertime will find a weight gainer indispensable. Those in need of an energy boost should give energy bars and carbohydrate powders/drinks a whirl. When it comes to protein, there is no question that demands are increased under the extra stress of exercising in the heat.

A recent study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found branched-chain amino acid supplementation could prolong moderate exercise performance in the heat. Branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) are anti-catabolic essential aminos which are in high demand anytime the body undergoes physical stress. Alternatively, a high quality protein powder with added branched-chain amino acids can be taken.

Heat Acclimatization
Many experienced athletes have also utilized heat acclimatization in order to minimize heat-related illnesses. Similar to your body adjusting to a change in altitude, heat acclimatization depends on the adaptive powers of the body.

Over a period of 10-14 days, the athlete gradually increases the intensity and duration of the workout while in the new environment. This allows the body to respond and successfully adjust to the increased demands placed on the body by the heat.

7 Tips You Need to Know After A Car Accident

If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident there are a million things racing through your head. We have listed seven helpful tips you need to know if/when that time comes.

1. Preventative: Make sure you have "med-pay" coverage on your insurance that will cover your care should the other parties involved not have coverage. This is the single-best course of action to avoid larger problems should an accident occur. Consider it insurance for the insurance. If you're not sure of your exact coverage right now, call your local insurance agent and review your policy. It's usually a few dollars more a month for this coverage, but it's the best line of defense.

2. Get all the parties information who were involved in the accident. Witnesses help too.

3. Contact your insurance to inform them of the accident as soon as possible.

4. Take pictures of the vehicles and yourself as soon as possible.

5. Call the police and request a full report be made if the accident damages and/or personal injuries have occurred.

6. Make a doctor's appointment (we recommend a chiropractor) for a brief, but thorough, examination.

7. Contact a personal injury attorney to represent you if insurance companies and involved parties aren't quickly coming to reasonable settlement.

More things you may not know about auto accidents.

Often, individuals involved in motor vehicle accidents experience minimal or no symptoms for the first few weeks and even months. It's important to not only receive immediate and appropriate treatment for any injuries sustained, but also to document the extent of the injuries, if present.

Failure to obtain a timely evaluation or appropriate treatment for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident may negate your ability to receive monetary compensation for any future medical bills resulting from the accident, negate your ability to receive pain and suffering settlements, and negate compensation for work loss.

What chiropractors can determine:

- the extent of the injury or injuries
- the number of estimated treatments required to treat your injuries
- if referral to another medical specialist is required
- if special tests are required (i.e. MRI, CT Scan, etc.)
- if you need to take "injury time off" from work (and provide you with a note to present to your employer)
- whether obtaining legal representation may be in your best interests (and recommend some excellent attorneys)

If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident, call (or have them call) our office immediately. The quicker you receive the care you need, the quicker your injuries will heal and the faster you can get on with your life.

Why Does My Head Hurt

So you have a headache. It stinks....but the good news is, you're not alone - and there's help available.

According to the latest research, 9% of men and 12% of women in the U.S. experience at least 1-2 headache episodes per month. And, more than 4% of the U.S. population suffers from frequent headaches, defined as headaches that occur at least 180 days a year. Needless to say, headaches have become a social and economic burden in the United States, as well as other parts of the world.

Scientists have identified over 300 causes for headaches. Various pain-sensitive structures and tissues including the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, arteries, periosteal bone covering, and the upper cervical and facial nerves produce headaches when irritated or injured. Fortunately, only a handful of causes are responsible for the majority of headaches.
The most common of these headaches include:

Cervicogenic- problems within the neck
Muscle-tension- neck and upper back muscular spasms
Post-traumatic- following head/neck trauma, i.e. whiplash
Drug-induced- from analgesic overuse
Migraines
Cluster

Doctors of chiropractic successfully help thousands of individuals everyday obtain safe, effective, long-term relief from their headaches. This is because most headaches have a spinal, muscular, or habitual component which the chiropractor has been trained to identify and treat.

In fact, surveys show that 10-25% of patients initiate chiropractic care for the relief of headaches.

Fall Is Coming - Do You Have Your Workout Routine?

Across the country, kids are going back to school, leaves are falling on the ground and it's getting darker earlier. Yikes, what happened to Summer!
While we can't fight the inevitable change of seasons, what we can fight is the late-year blues that come along with it.

For most, the Spring and Summer months are by far the most active for the year. Between vacations, long weekends and plenty of outdoor fun - activity levels are usually at their highest. Then the doldrums of Fall and Winter come...loved by many, but still lazier for all.

The following five tips are intended to help keep you active during the up-and-coming sedentary months.

1. Still try to walk for 30-45 minutes each day. Even though winds, rain, and snow are right around the corner for most, it is still important to get out and walk. If you weather doesn't cooperate, go walk at your local mall or other large indoor area.

2. Try to exercise earlier in the day. When the work day ends and it's already dark when you walk outside, usually the last thing you want to do is go workout. So, get motivated earlier in the day when it's brighter out.

3. Continue to drink water. Just because it's not as sunny, or as hot out during the Fall and Winter months doesn't mean you should stop drinking water. You should be consuming at least 8 full-size glasses of water during the day to stay properly hydrated.

4. Try not to alter your sleeping too much. In the Fall, people, just like bears - begin to hibernate more. Try to keep your bedtime the same, as well as your when you wake up. The less disruption of sleep and more consistency, the better for your overall body.

5. Get a motivated partner. Misery loves company. Laziness breeds content. Etc, Etc., Find a complementary workout/health partner (ie, spouse, best friend, co-worker, neighbor) to share in the health with you. You both will have someone to keep you honest.

If you take the time to stay on track this Fall, you'll make it through the holiday months more energized and less likely to gain those unwanted holiday pounds.

The Goods & Bads of Online Support Groups

These days, the internet is all the rage. Not that it hasn't been for the past 15 years, but now, everybody's gone surfin'....and many are seeking help.

And if you're someone who needs reassuring, focus, or just someone to discuss things with - you're in luck.

Today, the web 2.0 world is alive and well and is all about sharing, giving and getting.

The "I'll scratch your back, if you scratch mine" approach to website content and correspondence is now the norm.

But, should you be just jump in with both feet, or wade cautiously into the murky waters? Critics could easily argue for both sides. We believe you should be very mindful when it comes to your health - hence the purpose for this blog.

Surely by now most people have heard of, or even regularly use/contribute to social 'networking' sites like Facebook or MySpace. While these sites are some of the biggest out there, the amount of credible content is less-than-lacking. These sites are strictly ways to stay in touch with people, play games together and post neat photos. They are not, and should not be considered legitimate 'self-help' type sites. In fact, some users could actually stand to seek their own support group to kick their social networking habit.

Sites like: http://www.thedailyplate.com/, or http://www.sparkpeople.com/, are just a couple of places where you (along with 'teammates' in your local area) combine efforts to help each other see results.

Whether you need support to stop smoking, to diet, or to stick to your work-out/weight loss goals, there is seemingly a website out there for everyone.

But beware, not all of these sites are created equal...and not all are free.

Also, always be aware of the possibility of online predators in any scenario. In addition, misery loves company so be careful to pair/match yourself with truly motivated and moral individuals as much as possible. The last thing you need is another enabler. Make sure, as best you can that the individuals you partner/interact with compliment your skills and intended benchmark.

Our tip is to search for sites that automate correspondence with you and help keep you on track with whatever you need support with. Sites that email you menu ideas, exercise/fitness tips, and other daily tidbits often work well.

Self-help is right at your finger tips. You just need to type cautiously.

Chiropractic Care in a Time of Need

While the past couple of years have continued to bring strain to people's well-being, jobs, homelife, etc., many have been turning inward to make improvements in their lives.

Each week our office sees an average of about 125 patients. While all have differing problems which make them seek our care, all are sharing one trait that seemingly is a common thread to their current status. They are all under some sort of stress.

This tension manifests itself in a variety of ways, from headaches, to muscle tightness to sleep loss, etc.

Our office motto for the year has been, and still is: "You can't do anything about the mortgage business or the stock market, but you can do something for your health."

This is the year we've been steadily empowering patients to take control of their health and begin to exercise more and eat healthier.

Take time for yourself. Try to exercise, and yes walking counts, every day for at least 1/2 hour a day. That's not much folks! Just a simple walk around your neighborhood before, or after dinner can make all the difference in the world to your overall health.

And of course, chiropractic adjustments can help get you through the stressful times as well.
Drink water. Eat well. Exercise daily. Get enough sleep. See your chiropractor. This is your 'prescription' to wellness...Learn it! Live it! Love it!

Blogging, yelping, and pinging - oh, my!

These days, technology is getting so far ahead it's becoming a full-time challenge to keep up.

Now, if we want information about anything, it's right at our fingertips. Within seconds we can have multiple sources, on countless pages giving us the exact information we wanted or needed.

The same holds true for health information. There are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of health related sites out there providing information.

While some are chock-full of worthwhile, credible information - others have become the dinosaurs of the internet and have died an untimely death.

So how are we are Roseville Family Chiropractic staying ahead of the curve while trying to keep our patients up-t0-date?

Well, quite simply, we're taking the web 2.0 world by storm.

Aside from our website, and this blog, we can now be located on nearly 200 online directories. Our reviews and testimonials from our valued clients have been steadily helping us compete in the rankings. We advertise with a number of popular search engines, and have been actively working with our community to build a solid, reputation.

As technology continues to improve the medical community, we at Roseville Family Chiropractic are welcoming and embracing the change. We look forward to soon being able to provide even more quality time with our valued patients as we will soon be implementing new techology and equipment to our office.

Bare with us in our time of change...or even better, embrace the changing times with us and join in our online community and blog.

We encourage all of our patients to cut out, email, link or otherwise send us health articles and information you think we might share with others.

Together we can take care of each other.

Wii Sports Good In Theory - Not A Replacement For Regular Physical Fitness

It's all the rage!

Home entertainment and gaming consoles worldwide are a glow as kids of all ages have taken to their televisions to now get fit.

But is it an accurate replacement or variation of taking part in the natural event?
Does breaking a sweat in your living room constitute a workout?
Most say it's better than not breaking a sweat, but nevertheless, video game participation will always burn fewer calories than if you were to participate in that activity for real.
The Wii Gaming System, with its Wii Fit series of games is one of the industry's top sellers of fitness-related games and gear and provides home users the ability to participate in such sports as: boxing, cycling, road racing, bowling, tennis, yoga, and much more - all from the comfort of their home.

The popularity is such that now family fitness centers and health clubs nationwide are jumping on the bandwagon and opening virtual gaming centers to allow kids to 'workout' will they play video games.

While these days it's encouraging to find anything that can stimulate the general public into getting off their butts and 'exercising' - let's not fool ourselves. These activities are merely facsimiles to the real thing. We have to teach our kids that these video games are not replacements for actual physical fitness.

All elements of cardiovascular health, muscle usage, concentration and focus, eye-hand-contact, as well as aerobic/anaerobic exercise are slightly comprised when not actually participating in the 'natural' sport itself. In addition, research has shown extended times focusing on television has been know to affect eye site, attention spans, and increase hypertension in participants.

The moral of the story is video games will never and should never replace the actual game it mimics.

How & Why Your Health Insurance Matters More Than Ever

Everyday for 10 years now, we've encountered patients in our office who have very little, and sometimes even no knowledge of their medical insurance coverage - especially in regard to their chiropractic visits. They simply walk in, say they have "Kaiser, or BlueShield" or some other major provider's plan, hand us their card and wait to be told what, if any portion of the projected statements will be covered.
To not know what/who exactly your policy covers is simply naive. Now, we know not everyone has access to computers, and not everyone is familiar with fine print policies, but we always say, "If you're paying for it, you should know exactly what you're getting." Especially when it comes to your health and that of your family.

With the government striving toward a massive overhaul of the medical/medicare system while trying to eliminate private insurances and providers, it has become more critical to know and understand your exact benefits.

The following is a list of things EVERY ADULT should know about their current policies:

1. How much you pay every month (especially if it's automatically deducted from your paycheck through your company) - companies like http://www.esurance.com/ will help you compare like plans

2. Know how much your co-payment is for each office visit you may make

3. Know how much your deductible is and if it's been met yet for that calendar year

4. Know what additional services (in regard to your specific treatment needs; ie., massage coverage, pillows, etc. if you're planning on seeing a chiropractor)

5. Know if you need a referral from your primary care physician before seeing anyone else, and if so, how long and what do you have to do to obtain that authorization.

6. If you're seeking chiropractic care, how many visits under your plan are you entitled to for that calendar year

Children's School Gym Injuries On The Rise

In a story published online today, a new study cites a 150% increase in gym class injuries in children over the last 10 years. From 1997-2007, reported injuries jumped significantly. Although the report doesn't give a definitive answer as to the primary reason for this increase, there is speculation that an increased focus on physical fitness combined with a decrease in school nurses and trained physical education staff in schools (where regular classroom teachers may now be running the gym class) - could be to blame.

Another possible reason for increased injuries could be directly linked to the rise in childhood obesity. Children are heavier than ever before, and are no simply unable to do even the simplest of task without risk of injury. Lack of physical fitness outside of school hours could also be to blame, as students have become less conditioned. In addition, proper hydration, a proper diet and proper stretching can also factor in to the equation.

Whatever the case may be, parents should play a more active role in their child's overall health and at least understand the daily demands your child is undergoing. Knowing when and what your child eats throughout the day, in correlation to when their gym class is - can help better prepare them. Knowing and understanding your child's fitness level also helps to avoid them participating in an activity that may be too strenuous for them.

Physical education is critical to the overall development of your child. Not just physically, but mentally as well.

The article that cited the study concludes with this: "In the gym class of the future, all physical fitness will be achieved through safe & secure usage of the Nintendo Wii." Whereas this has been implemented in fitness centers nationwide as a remedy for getting kids active in physical exercise - we should not be striving to make this the "norm". Kids need exercise via more conventional and traditional means - not through the aid of a video console. Take responsibility and take charge of your child's health and help prevent injury by adhering to some of the aforementioned tasks.

Back To School - What You Need To Be Aware Of

Parents: It's that time of the year again. The hot Summer sun is quickly fading earlier with each passing day. What's this all mean? It's back to school time.

But, before you send your kids away and fully focus on regaining your sanity, here's a health checklist to ensure your kids are well prepared for the enduring school days ahead.

1. Back Pack Check - Not all packs are created equal. All kids must have a pack that distributes the weight evenly and has not only shoulder straps, but horizontal straps that tie across the chest and around the waste. Properly securing the heavy weight of a full book bag will ensure good posture and minimize strain on any one body part.

2. Proper Nutrition Will Fuel Their Day - Before headed out the door, make sure your kids get have something to eat. Fruits, Cereals, Juices, Milks and high-protein foods will help keep your child's energy and concentration levels up.

3. A Full Night's Sleep Will Keep Them Awake - No more sleep overs and all-nighters. When school is back in, it's all about a full 8-hours of sleep. Because of the physical, as well as the mental energy exuded, it's important your child gets the necessary sleep to be fresh and attentive the next day as well.

4. Limit TV Time Now That There's Homework - Summer is all about staying up late, playing video games and watching t.v. However, now that school is back in session more focus should be given on academic studies to increase retention. TV, music and certainly video games are only a distraction to getting back on track with studying for most subjects - unless they're taking T.V. or music appreciation. Then, that's your call.

5. Health Check-Ups Before School - A healthy child is a more energized child, is a more learned child. Make sure to have your child evaluated by a health care professional prior to the start of a school year to make sure the proper attention is being placed on that individual's current health. With obesity still taking over the nation, it's important each child know how to handle their own health and self-control when you're not around to help them.

These are just a few of the things you can do to help your child ease back into the school year safely and easily.

Blue M&M's and Blue Gatorade Good For Your Spine?

The following is a story published by CNN regarding recent ongoing research indicating that blue food dye could be used to reduce damage to injured spines.

The story definitely made us go, "hmmm" - so we thought we'd share the info with all who may be interested to learn where medical advancements may be headed.

Now, we can say we aren't necessarily advocating a new diet consisting of blue-dye enriched foods and drinks, but it does make you wonder what may lie ahead in this arena, and if yellow, red, green and brown dyes might have magical powers too.

Enjoy.

(CNN) -- The same blue food dye found in M&Ms and Gatorade could be used to reduce damage caused by spine injuries, offering a better chance of recovery, according to new research.
Rats injected with BBG not only regained their mobility but temporarily turned blue.
Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that when they injected the compound Brilliant Blue G (BBG) into rats suffering spinal cord injuries, the rodents were able to walk again, albeit with a limp.
The only side effect was that the treated mice temporarily turned blue.
The results of the study, published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences," build on research conducted by the same center five years ago.
In August 2004, scientists revealed how Adenosine triphosphate, which is known as ATP and described as the "energy currency of life," surges to the spinal cord soon after injury occurs.
Researchers found that the sudden influx of ATP killed off healthy cells, making the initial injury far worse. But when they injected oxidized ATP into the injury, it was found to block the effect of ATP, allowing the injured rats to recover and walk again.
"While we achieved great results when oxidized ATP was injected directly into the spinal cord, this method would not be practical for use with spinal cord-injured patients," said lead researcher Maiken Nedergaard, professor of Neurosurgery and director of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
"First, no one wants to put a needle into a spinal cord that has just been severely injured, so we knew we needed to find another way to quickly deliver an agent that would stop ATP from killing healthy motor neurons. Second, the compound we initially used, oxidized ATP, cannot be injected into the bloodstream because of its dangerous side effects."

Back in 2004, Nedergaard's team discovered that the spinal cord was rich in a molecule called P2X7, which is also known as "the death receptor" for its ability to allow ATP to latch onto motor neurons and send the signals which eventually kill them.
Nedergaard knew that BBG could thwart the function of P2X7, and its similarity to a blue food dye approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1982 gave her the confidence to test it intravenously.
It worked. The rats given BBG immediately after their injury could walk again with a limp. Those that didn't receive a dose never regained their mobility.
Nedergaard told CNN that there is currently no standard treatment for patients with spinal injury when they reach the hospital emergency room.
"Right now we only treat 15 percent of the patients we receive with steroids and many hospitals question if that even works for that 15 percent; it's a very moderate benefit to only a subset of patients. So right now 85 percent of patients are untreated," she said.
Nedergaard said the research team isn't claiming that BBG can cure spinal injuries, instead that it offers a potential improvement in patients' condition.
"Even a moderate improvement in functional performance of the patient is a big, big event for these patients," she said. "They can control their bladder. If they can just take small steps instead of sitting in a wheelchair all the time, it's a tremendous benefit for these patients," she added.
The dose must be administered immediately after the injury, before additional tissue dies as a result of the initial injury.
Researchers are currently pulling together an application to be lodged with the FDA to stage the first clinical trials of BBG on human patients.
"Our hope is that this work will lead to a practical, safe agent that can be given to patients shortly after injury, for the purpose of decreasing the secondary damage that we have to otherwise expect," said Steven Goldman, Chair of the University of Rochester Department of Neurology.

No Two Feet Are Created Equal

Snowflakes, pearls and thumbprints all have this unique characteristic. What is it? Well, of course you're probably saying, no two are alike.

Well now, we're going to discuss another one-of-a-kind item. Your feet...actually, I guess that's two.

Your feet are not only different from everyone else in the world, but they're different from one-another.

So why is this a big deal you ask?

It isn't an issue if you have your three 'normal' arches and all of your weight is being supported properly. However, as an office that has incorporated foot scans into its examination process we are seeing a huge influx of individuals who have lost the majority of their arches and are in dire need of proper support and stabilization.

In less than five minutes, we can help you determine if your feet (and your body) could benefit from the use of orthotics, pelvic stabilizers, heel lifts, or other form or insert.

Aided by the use of the high-tech scanning capability produced by Foot Levelers, we are able to get a significantly better understanding of not just your feet, but more importantly, the role they play - and how they communicate or function with the rest of your body.

This valuable insight a foot scan lends is usually the wake up call most need to begin to take their feet seriously.

The moral of this story is, proper footwear, supports, and overall attention to your makes for a healthier you. Be kind to your feet, because they're the only ones you have and the rest of your body is depending on them.

New Kids Parks Bring Hidden Dangers

There's nothing better than watching your healthy kids laughing and giggling while they run around, playing with friends. However, we all know with playing comes 'the occasional slip and fall'.

New indoor "parks" are all the rage in suburban areas around the country. While these indoors gyms and activity centers are an ideal way to beat the harsh Summer heat - or those cold Winter days, they can also be quite dangerous.

Over the past few months we have seen a higher-than-normal average of younger patients in our Roseville Family Chiropractic office with injuries sustained as a result of playing at these facilities.

From water slide parks, to jump centers, to indoor sports complexes, children's injuries have been piling up.

The number one culprit. TRAMPOLINES. While it's fun to jump and feel free, with each landing and launching comes a compression and stress to each-and-every joint, muscles, and vertebrae in your body. These repetitive 'concussions', coupled with mis-jumps or bad landings equals lots of aches, pains and possibly even greater injury.

If you or your children plan on attending any type of climbing, jumping, bouncing indoor sports facility always be careful.

Here are five tips to help ensure your trip to the indoor fun zone in your area is injury free.

1. Make sure you have the proper footwear

2. Stretch before and after you participate to help with your flexibility, agility, strength and balance

3. Stay hydrated so your muscles and body are properly balanced

4. Watch out for and avoid participating with too many others at any one time - One persons' launching pad is another one's landing pad and striking the trampoline at "off" times can really jam your body

5. Take breaks every now and then to allow your body to properly rest

All of these tips can help you and your family safe while enjoying vacation.

Add More Zest To Your Life With Supplements

Doctors and health advisers are always trying to get you to eat better - or healthier.

It's no wonder why so many professionals are adamant. Our nation's obesity epidemic and prescription drug dependencies have grown to an alarming level.

While prescriptions can help, they always can strip the body of its natural need for proper nutritional balance.

So how can you fight these evil forces you ask?

One of the best things anyone can do to improve overall health is to take nutritional supplements (vitamins/minerals) in addition to his/her normal diet.

In our office we sell a couple of different products aimed at promoting longevity and vitality.

Pure Encapsulations and BioPharma are the two manufacturers of supplements we feature in our office.

BioPharma has a line of powder supplements (NanoGreens, NanoPro and NanOmega3) designed to give you all the fruits and vegetables, protein and Omega 3 fatty acids essential for your body's optimum performance. We have free samples and recipes available in our office and for the month of July you can save 10% off any purchase.

PURE has an entire series of supplements aimed at counter-balancing your system if you are on other medications that may be depleting or stripping your body of it's necessary nutrients.

While daily exercise, proper hydration and a well-balanced diet are all keys to aging gracefully, so to is the need to introduce nutritional supplements into your life.

Check out our website for more information, or visit our office to learn more about the benefits of these fantastic products.

Stress Sucks The Life Out Of You

To say times are tough is a little bit of an understatement in the world today.

Stock markets, jobless claims, foreclosures, war, etc., etc., etc.....blah, blah, blah!

These days, the daily news equals stress for most people. But while the future may remain out of our control, the one thing we can take charge of this year is OUR HEALTH!

Here are some tips to distress and learn to improve your life this year.

1. Visit your chiropractor often. Regular visits can alleviate tight muscles and tension.

2. Take breaks throughout your day. Brief interruptions to your stressful workday will help clear your mind, and get blood flowing to other parts of your body.

3. Drink more water. This is one thing we preach all the time. Water is the cure for all that ails you....including stress.

4. Learn to let things slide off your back. Don't sweat the petty stuff. Things happen. Just relax, regroup and move on.

5. A little more planning might save you some headaches. Don't procrastinate, accelerate or stray from original plans. Disruptions in our schedules and life usually equals increased stress levels.

We hope you find these tips useful and learn to deflect the stresses in your life. If you're still in need of "decompression" - visit our website, or call and schedule an appointment today.

Life is too short for stressful episodes.

Kids Need Chiropractic Too

If you're a parent we don't need to tell you how often kids fall, bump or crash. Now, whereas most know how to handle cuts and scraps and bruises, but bandages and Eskimo kisses don't necessarily work when it comes to often hidden musculoskeletal injuries.

While most parents have no qualms scheduling regular pediatric or dental exams, they often give little or no thought to the importance of having their children regularly examined by a chiropractor.

From birth, through the toddler years and even when they begin to fully engage in all activities on their own, children's bodies go through an incredible amount of stress and strain. Spinal misalignments and other nerve impingements are often common place, but can be addressed and overcome with a simple visit to the chiropractor.

Below is a list of just some of the conditions chiropractic has been known to positively address:

- Colic

- Bed wetting

- Asthma

- Allergies

- Scoliosis

- Ear Infections

- Headaches

- Sports Injuries

- Back Pain

- Neck Pain

- Auto mobile accidents

Don't be afraid to ask your doctor about chiropractic care for your children. There are things that can be done to help alleviate a vast majority of your child's pain without medications and the possibility of their harmful side-effects.

This 4th of July - Don't be a Weekend Warrior

It's been a whirl-wind over the past two weeks as Summer has officially come to Northern California.

While most of us really enjoy this time of year, it never ceases to amaze us how many patients begin presenting in our office with what we affectionately call, "Weekend Warrior Syndrome." This is when a person sustains an injury as the result of doing something (usually aggressively) for the first time in a long time.

While Winter brings its share of ski and snowboarding related injuries, Summer seems to laughingly trump the cold weather months when it comes to patients reporting with complaints.

Injuries sustained while wake boarding, water skiing, skateboarding, sitting in bleachers at baseball games, family picnics etc, are all atop the list for most common reasons patients begin to flock to our office. Oh, and don't forget yard work, as well as the stress of having the children home from school.

So, our advice to all as we enter this wonderful 4th of July holiday weekend is to have a nice, relaxing weekend with friends and family - and don't overdue it.

To help ensure you do stay 'safe and sane' this weekend - and throughout your Summer for that matter, we have compiled five friendly tips to keep you feeling healthy all year long.

1. Don't overdue yourself. This holds especially true if you haven't participated in physical activities since last Summer. Gradually work your way up to things as opposed to jumping right in.

2. Stretch before doing ANYTHING that requires ANY physical exertion. Five-to-10 minutes of stretching and warming up your muscles can make all the difference in the world.

3. Drink water and stay hydrated. Your body needs water to help keep all of it's parts functional. Dehydration causes fatigue which subsequently can lead to increased risk of injury.

4. Avoid the heat of the day. Even if all you're going to do is 'harmlessly' mow your lawn, try to do outdoor activities either early in the morning or in the earlier evening time to avoid the hot temps.

5. Don't just sit around all day. When you're out enjoying your kids soccer or little league game, or you're at the beach, parks, baseball stadiums etc, you have to stand up and walk around periodically. Sitting for extended periods of time makes the muscles constrict and limits the blood circulation, ultimately limiting ranges of movements, fatigued muscles and lending to more nagging aches and pains.

Michael Jackson's Death Could Have Been Avoided

Here we are less than 24-hours since the passing of two Hollywood icons in the same day and the world is still reeling with shock and disbelief. The deaths of both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson cast a dark shadow over a normally bright and sunny Summer day.

As the world followed Fawcett's tremendous struggle with cancer over much of the past year, Jackson's death came with a universal sense of disbelief, questions and rumors.

Initial reports had Jackson suffering from a cardiac arrest. Reports the next morning said Jackson had allegedly increased his intake of pain killer medications in the recent months, and it was questioned if Jackson self-medicated the day of his passing with the drug Demerol.

Whatever truly comes out in his official autopsy, a prominent figures' life was again tragically cut short due to his alleged use of prescription drugs.

Because we, as chiropractors, can not/do not prescribe pharmaceuticals we avoid "side effects" to medications through our treatments.

It had been rumored that over the years Jackson frequently called on the services of alternative and homeopathic leaders and healers to assist in his daily journey of balance. However, in the end, it appears he became another senseless victim of today's topsy-turvy prescription drug world.

Hopefully...sometime soon, people of all walks of life (even those who moonwalk) will realize the importance of taking care of your body and become more concerned of the potential fatal effects of prescription meds.

20 Things You Can Do To Help Protect Your Back

Too often we take our bodies for granted. It's important to understand our bodies, and their limitations.

Here is a list of 20 things you can do to help protect your back and your overall body.

Sitting:

1. Maintain the three normal curves of the spine as much as possible

2. Sit with you back against the back of the chair and your feet firmly planted, flat on the floor.

3. Try to avoid slumping or sitting to any one side

4. When you're driving, be sure to adjust your seat accordingly to minimize strain on your joints.

Lifting / Carrying:

5. Plan before you lift...how heavy is it, how far will you be carrying it, how will set it down.

6. Bend the knees and squat when reaching itesm below your waist.

7. Pivot your body naturally and avoid twisting

8. Push vs. pull...use your body to assist rather than placing strain on it.

Standing:

9. Make sure to change positions regularly if you have to stand for a prolonged period.

10. It's all about the shoes...if you have to stand for an excessive period of time, make sure you have shoes with proper arch, heel and overall foot suport.

11. If you have to stand for a long period, try to use a footstool or something to take the tension off of your low back.

Other Miscellaneous Tasks:

12. Don't ever carry too much. When carrying excessive loads (ie, luggage, groceries, boxes, etc.) make sure to balance the weight evenly and take your time lifting and lowering.

13. If you are on the phone constantly, consider a hands-free head set. No more needing to squeeze the phone between your shoulder and the side of your head.

14. If you work or play at a computer for extended periods of time, make sure your ergonomics are good. Feet flat on the floor, under the desk, a comfortable distance to see your monitor and reach for your mouse, etc.

Sleep:

15. Make sure you sleep on a firm mattress. Try flipping the mattress every few months to preserve its longevity.

16. When you can, sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees.

Prevention:

17. Exercise daily, or as often as possible. Keeping control of your weight and increasing strength, flexibility, endurance, etc. are all keys to a healthy frame.

18. Avoid overdoing it - especially to the point of injuring yourself. If something you do 'hurts' don't do that activity and discuss other options with your doctor.

19. Drink lots of water. This helps your body stay hydrated and ultimately helps it perform necessary daily functions.

20. Stay stress free. Stress tightens your muscles and makes it harder for your body to properly perform.

Keep these tips in mind for a healthy, happier you.

10 Things To Do To Stay Healthy This Summer

You've packed the suitcases, loaded the car, run to catch your plane, squeezed into the "ever-shrinking" window seat, slept three hours with your head wedged between your window and upright seat, taken a bus ride to your rental car- driven an hour to get to your hotel, hauled all your luggage to your room and unpacked.

While vacationing can be fun, getting there can take its toll on your body. That's why it's important to keep your neck and back in tune and consider getting adjusted before your travels.

This is a list of things you can do to ensure your safety, and that of your family members while enjoying the Summer.

1. Get an adjustment before and after long car or plane trips.

2. Bring supportive pillows whenever possible. Hotels are notorious for bad pillows.

3. Be aware when lifting and carrying heavy items including: luggage, coolers, backpacks, and camping / sporting gear.

4. Be aware when on roller coasters, or water slides - especially entering, or exiting the ride.

5. Be aware when chasing or wrestling with children and pets - especially bending, twisting and lifting.

6. Make sure you stay properly hydrated and eat nutritiously.

7. Be extra-cautious when the moment approaches itself to go boating, sailing, parasailing, scuba diving, jet skiing, wake boarding. These water activities repetitively jar the back and joints.

8. Don't over-exert yourself - especially in the heat.

9. Be careful to not leave anyone or anything perishable in the hot cars for too long.

10. Error on the side of caution when it comes to activities you are not used to doing...avoid being a casualty of 'Weekend Warrior Syndrome'.

Relief Care to Wellness Care

When you, or someone you know has been injured, you're only really ever concerned with, 'when am I going to start feeling better?'

You generally don't dwell on what made you feel that way, but instead, when am I going to start sleeping through the night again....or when is this headache going to go away....or, when am I going to be able to stand again for more than an hour without my back hurting?

These generalized examples daily tasks can often be a struggle when you're injured.

When you visit any doctor, your initial visit is generally a relief care visit. Relief care that is necessary to help rid your body of your symptoms of pain - BUT NOT THE CAUSE. An example of this is drying a floor that was standing water, but not fixing the leak that caused the water to be there.

As opposed to relief care, chiropractic focuses on 'corrective, or wellness care.' Corrective care differs from relief care in that its goal is to get rid of pain - while correcting the cause of the pain at the same time.

Wellness care is what we strive to instill in all our patients. Overall wellness care incorporates all the elements for preventive health care including; nutrition/diet, aerobic conditioning, good posture, strength training, proper rest and periodic spinal adjustments. In short, wellness involves all aspects of your lifestyle, everyday.

While most of us are used to relief care in our 'instant gratification world' we live in...it's wellness care that will keep us feeling younger and living longer.

Give "wellness" a chance and start to make some life changes today. Your body will thank you for it later.
